Gearing up for firearm deer season
ISHPEMING — Firearm deer season begins Sunday, and many hunters are getting ready to don their blaze orange in hopes of bagging a big buck.
Stores like Wilderness Sports in Ishpeming are helping hunters get in gear to score their next trophy. Bringing items like a cell phone and some food and water along on the hunt can helpful in an emergency. A compass is also a recommended piece of equipment.
“It’s easy to get yourself turned around in unfamiliar territory,” said Todd Kauppinen, a sales associate at Wilderness Sports in Ishpeming. “So a person should always have something that can help them directionally get back to where they need to be.”
Certain types of ammunition have historically been hard to come by this late in the game. While things look more promising this year, hunters should be aware that some bullets might be sold out.
“The biggest issue that I’ve seen with hunters waiting ’til the last minute this year is they may not get the particular weight of a bullet that they want,” Kauppinen added.
Wilderness Sports will be open on opening day for any last minute hunting needs.
