Gas Station Drive-Offs
Several incidents at Marquette County gas stations where customers drove off without paying for their fuel have attracted media attention recently.
Are drive–offs more common at times like this, with gas prices at a record high for the month of March?
Chocolay Township Police Chief Greg Zyburt says ‘no’.
In a two–week period, the township will usually have three to five gas drive–offs.
That’s the same as before the prices spiked.
He says most drive–off customers simply *forget* to pay, but they are starting to hear about more and more drivers who do drive-offs at several different gas stations across the county.
If you steal gas and get caught, you can go to jail for 93 days.
You won’t be able to drive around for a while once you get out.
And it’ll also cost you some serious cash — Chief Zyburt says you’ll be assessed about $1,000 in fines.
Almost all gas stations now have security cameras, even mom–and–pop stores.
Sales clerks will also ask anyone who comes to the register if they’ve pumped any gas in an attempt to prevent drive–offs.
