UP POWER! Hematites win state title!

DETROIT — For the third time in four years, the Ishpeming Hematites are Division 7 State Champs! The Hematites defeated Pewamo-Westphalia 22-16 at Ford Field. Ozzy Corp had all three rushing touchdowns for Ishpeming.


Corp followed his offensive lineman in for a 1-yard touchdown with under 5 minutes left for the 20-14 lead. Corp then stretched the ball over the goal line for the successful 2-point conversion attempt, giving the Hematites a 22-16 lead.

END of 3: At the end of three quarters of play, Pewamo-Westphalia leads Ishpeming 16-14.

Ozzy Corp carried the load for the Hematites on their opening possession of the third quarter. Corp found the end zone from 4-yards out. Corp also scored on the 2-pt conversion, cutting the deficit to 16-14. That was the only scoring drive in the third quarter.


 

HALFTIME: Pewamo-Westphalia leads Ishpeming 16-6 at halftime. In the second quarter, the Pirates were able to score on a 25-yard run by Jared Smith for a touchdown and a 50-yard pass play by Dominic Spitzley to Reece Platte for a 50-yard TD.

P-W then led 16-0 after a controversial 2-point conversion attempt. It appeared that Smith fumbled the ball short of the goal line, but the officials ruled it a successful conversion.

The Hematites were able to sustain a drive just before the half. Ishpeming drove down to the Pirates 1-yard line. On 4th and Goal, Ozzy Corp followed his blockers in for the touchdown to make it a 16-6 game. The 2-point conversion try was unsuccessful. Ishpeming’s drive covered 71 yards in 13 plays.


END of 1: Ishpeming and Pewamo-Westpahalia are tied 0-0. The Pirates took the opening kickoff 65 yards before Ishpeming stuffed them on 4th and Goal from the Hematites 1-yard line.

Ishpeming had one possession in the first quarter. They were able to move the ball out of their own end zone before punting.
