Full house at Marquette’s City Commission meeting

A full house showed up tonight for Marquette’s City commission meeting. Several items were on the agenda. Community members were in full force for public comments.

Phoenix and Ella Waskik were honored with plaques and cupcakes during a ceremony for the U.P. Children’s Museum Youth leadership awards.

Nitro, an expert in Bomb sniffing dog, will join the city’s prestigious K–9 unit. The newest member was sworn in to the Marquette Police Deptarment with his handlers, Sergeant Marty Munger, and Officer Todd Collins.

Marquette is also moving forward with a new ‘Smart Zone’ plan. Fred Taccolini presented the plan which received much community support. A few concerns regarding taxes and oversight implementation remain.

The tense item on the agenda this evening was the rowing club issue. Whether or not to allow the building of a private club for the Upper Peninsula Community Rowing Club on public land was discussed, and voted on. The City Commission voted in favor of the UPCRC lease 5 to 2.
