NEGAUNEE — A great way to kick off the holiday season is to save a life. For a limited time you can rescue a pet from UPAWS at no cost at all.

The Upper Peninsula Animal Welfare Shelter began their first black Friday weekend special with a generous number of visitors. All of the pets adopted will be spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and micro–chipped, but it gets even better. Every application that is approved by UPAWS staff will have all of the adoption fees waived.

“This is due to a sponsorship from Best Friends Animal Society and also the company Zappos.com,” said UPAWS Community Outreach Coordinator Ann Brownell, “Zappos.com is paying 100% of the adoptions for 150 shelters across the nation and UPAWS is one of two in Michigan that were picked to participate in this.”

The first day of the event brought a line to the door full of people looking to take home a rescued pet.

“We’re really busy,” added Brownell, “the parking lot was full of people and everybody is pretty excited. But everybody is polite and excited to meet the pets and having a good time.”

If you were unable to make it today, there’s no need to worry. The free adoption program will continue from 12-4 on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.
