MARQUETTE — This weekend’s weather is looking sunnier, which is good news for those looking to do some free fishing.

The free fishing weekend hosted by the Department of Natural Resources is June 11 and 12.

For one weekend in the summer and one in winter, Michigan residents and visitors to the state are able to fish without purchasing a fishing license.

Participants can use the opportunity to influence new anglers and even family members.

“It gives people an opportunity to come out and try fishing if it’s something they haven’t tried before or if they want to get their family out and since it’s free, you can get your whole family to come out and fish and enjoy the weekend and enjoy opportunities,” said DNR Deputy Public Information Officer John Pepin.

There are places around the state holding events for those that wish to partake in the festivities but may not know where to get started. The DNR has a list of species around the state and where the best body of water to catch them are found.
