Four Boxers Win Golden Gloves State Titles

MARQUETTE – Four United States Olympic Education Center boxers won state champion titles to advance to the U.S. National Golden Gloves tournament April 24-30 in Indianapolis, Ind.

Northern Michigan University sophomore Jesse Hart (Philadelphia, Pa.) is the Pennsylvania state champion at 165 pounds. Hart had a second-round knockout against Scott Bradley (Carrick Community Boxing Academy) for the state title. He was named outstanding fighter of the night.

“I had good body shots and was able to stop my opponent,” Hart said. “Now, I need to work on being more patient and staying behind my jab.”

Freshman Damon Allen (Philadelphia, Pa.), junior Carlo Santos (Kansas City, Kan.) and sophomore Darnell Parker (Kansas City, Kan.) earned the Wisconsin state title in their respective weight classes.

Allen defeated Jose Ortiz (Madison Ford’s Gym) by unanimous decision at 132 lbs.

“This weekend was a good warm-up [for nationals]. Coach [Al Mitchell] steered me in the right direction during my fight,” Allen said. “For nationals, I need to stay focused, confident and humble at the same time.”
Santos and Parker went unopposed at 114 lbs and 152 lbs, respectively.
