Forest Official: Wildfire now under control
CHIPPEWA COUNTY — The wildfire that burned 56 acres of land in the eastern U.P. is now under control thanks in part to Mother Nature.
According to U.S. Forest Service District Manager Robert West, about a quarter inch of rain that fell Thursday night helped firefighters to suppress the Pine Plantation Fire.
The wildfire was spotted Wednesday afternoon on the Hiawatha National Forest Lands, southwest of Raco in Chippewa County.
Officials were able to contain the fire from spreading by establishing a dozer line.
Firefighters will spend the next two days mopping up the fire.
The cause of the blaze is said to be a recent lightning strike.
No one was injured and no structures were ever threatened by the fire.
