Flaming snowman runs off with winter at Lake Superior State

Most people take joy in building a snowman, but after this year’s seemingly endless winter, burning one down can feel just as good.

Students at Lake Superior State University sent off winter in style today, setting fire to a 12-foot snowman effigy dubbed Mr. Polar Vortex.

The annual ceremony has been a mainstay on the Sault Ste. Marie campus since 1971. The snowman was supposed to be torched yesterday when spring officially arrived in the Northern Hemisphere, but Mother Nature had other plans, producing high winds that posed a safety hazard.

However, today provided the perfect climate to torch old Frosty. A few hundred students, faculty and staff members attended the event, complete with buckets full of daffodils and plenty of freshly-grilled hotdogs.
