Fizz, Bang, Traveling Science a big hit with kids
Even though school is out, kids of all ages had a chance to learn a little science Monday night in the most interactive ways.
Fizz, Bang, Traveling Science is a statewide tour put on by the Michigan Science Center. They stopped in at the Peter White Public Library to give kids a hands-on experience with science, technology, engineering, and math.
Experiments ranged from learning how a vacuum and air pressure works, kinetic energy, and making slime.
“We do a lot of fun things, like the slime is really fun, but they’re learning about polymers and polymer science and material science while they’re doing that,” Michigan Science Center outreach coordinator Charles Gibson said. “Making these things really accessible, letting them know they can do a lot of these things at home, but also teaching them something really important, getting them started at the basis of future sciences.”
The program coincides with the library’s science-themed summer reading program, Fizz, Bang, Read, and keeps kids interested in coming to the library.
“Just keeping kids coming to the library during the summer so they don’t forget that we’re here. It happens, kids get really busy during the summer,” PWPL children services librarian Sarah Rehborg said.
“(Science) is the same thing with reading, how reading during the summer can really help keep a kid focused during school and ready for the next school year, doing things like science is a really great way do it. This activity alone is a great family activity, it’s geared towards all ages.”
Fizz, Bang, Traveling Science is making stops at other U.P. libraries the remainder of this week:
- July 2: Munising Public Library
- July 2: Manistique Public Library
- July 3: Les Cheneaux Library
