Fishing Hitting U.P. Early This Year

Thanks to the warm late winter weather, the U.P.’s fishing season is starting a little earlier than usual this year.

The Department of Natural Resources and Environment is already seeing an early boost in fishing interest this year, even among DNRE staff themselves.

The DNRE fish hatchery is stocking lake trout and splake into Lake Michigan later this week.

Fishery station manager Phil Schneeberger says that’s a month earlier than they planned for, but turnout is somewhat slow because many don’t realize the DNRE has already started the season.

The DNRE wants to remind everyone of a rule change they’ve made for Lake Superior trout.

The bag limit has been raised to 5 lake trout.
