Fatalities during Labor Day weekend down from 2012
The Michigan State Police say the number of fatalities due to Labor Day traffic accidents have decreased since 2012.
Police say four people were killed in three separate accidents; in 2012, eight people died.
Of the four fatalities, two people were known to have used seat belts. Police say alcohol was a factor in one crash. One accident involved a car striking a bicycle, while the other involved a motorcyclist who was not wearing a helmet.
In a press release, Commander of the MSP Training Division Captain Kari Kusmierz stated in a press release:
“These numbers are preliminary and only reflect those fatalities reported to the MSP as of 11 a.m. on Tuesday, September 3, 2013. The preliminary numbers show a decrease in fatalities from this same holiday period last year. The MSP continues to urge motorists not to drink and drive, to always use proper restraints and to drive safely at all times.”
The 2013 Labor Day holiday weekend ran from 6 p.m. on Friday, August 30, through 11:59 p.m., on Monday, September 2.
