Fatal Alger County Snowmobile Wreck

A Wisconsin man dies, and a Kansas man is hurt, in an Alger County snowmobile accident.

State police from the Munising post say it happened shortly after 8:30 Friday morning on Hovey Lake Road in Au Train Township.

A group of 6 snowmobilers, riding together, hit a snow embankment at an intersection.

All of them lost control of their machines.

2 of the riders were taken to Munising Memorial Hospital and later transferred to Marquette General.

42-year-old Nicholas Waranka of Port Washington, Wisconsin died from his injuries.

44-year-old Paul Murphy of Lake Quivira, Kansas was still in intensive care at Marquette General at last report.

There’s no word on his condition.

The other 4 drivers weren’t hurt.

Police believe high speeds and following too closely both played a part in the crash.
