Fashion show helps to raise money for Aura’s centennial

Anyone looking for the latest fashions had plenty of options Wednesday night at Crock & Rocker’s Mother’s Day Fashion Show in Baraga.

And, the fashion show raised money for a town’s centennial celebration.

The Aura Centennial Committee received a portion of ticket sales from the fashion show, and were selling raffle tickets, T-shirts, and other items to help raise money for the celebration in June.

The committee has raised about $4,000 so far, but is looking to raise more to help cover additional costs.

“We’re trying to raise money to put on the dinner and the program and buy the supplies and get the mailings out to everyone that we can, and everyone’s relatives who don’t live here anymore and all that,” Aura Centennial Committee member Mary Williams said.

Crock & Rocker’s store is located in Michigamme, but do trunk shows across the Upper Peninsula to highlight fashions, and regularly teams up with organizations to help raise money.

“From time to time we do work in conjunction with a fundraiser, and this show happens to be in conjunction with the Aura Centennial.  Linda Kinnunen is the one who initiated that,” Crock & Rocker co-owner Ruth Warner said.  “So, (the trunk shows) are not always a fundraiser, but we’ve had an opportunity to help other and help societies and build funds for them.”

“With Crock & Rocker they’ve been extremely generous and their name brings people in and it’s supporting us,” Williams said.  “And we’re also letting all these people know in this whole area–I mean there’s people from Hancock and Houghton and the Keweenaw that are here tonight–and it’s letting them know about the centennial, and about the other things that go on in Aura, like the Aura Jamboree in July.  They’re asking questions and we’re selling cookbooks for the fire department.  We’re having a great time.”

Aura’s Centennial Celebration is scheduled for June 21-22.  For more information or to make donations, click here or visit Baraga County’s website.
