Excessive speed results in fatal injury for snowmobile rider

MUNISING — A snowmobile accident has left one man dead in Munising Township.

Michigan State Police Troopers from the Negaunee Post, Munising Detachment were called to the scene of the accident just before 5:00 p.m. Wednesday evening. The crash took place on H–13 near the Hiawatha National Forest Wide Waters Campground access road.

Steve Short, 57, of Fort Wayne, Indiana, was traveling southbound when he lost control of his sled. Short crossed the roadway, struck a snow bank and overturned and was thrown from his snowmobile. This resulted in a fatal injury.

Excessive speed is considered to be a factor in the crash, which is still under investigation.
