Here’s some information obtained from Running Amuck and memory of the original Sisu Run. This run was first held on January 1, 1982 and continued through January 1, 1994. The start and finish was at Hedgcock fieldhouse on the NMU campus and ran over the top of Marquette Mountain. The distance was listed as 20 K and the contact person was Jim Godell who provided a white T-shirt with “Sisu Run” and the appropriate Roman numeral for the year of the run added with marker each year. Some unfortunate (?) soul was selected each year to wear the shirt for the run. Jim died on March 6, 2015 at the age of 80. An excerpt from his obituary reads as follows:
Jim was a proud Finlander and the SISU coursing through his veins was strong and thick. Sisu is “a special strength and persistent determination and resolve to continue and overcome in the moment of adversity… an almost magical quality, a combination of stamina, perseverance, courage, and determination held in reserve for hard times.” Jim Godell had a ton of SISU.
So this year’s Sisu Run will be dedicated in the memory of Jim Godell, I’m sure he is looking down and encouraging with us with these words that he said each year before the Sisu Run: “If you finish the Sisu Run, you will finish every race you run for the entire year!”
