Negaunee, MI – The Historic Vista Theater & Peninsula Arts Appreciation Council are excited to announce their 2016 summer musical Disney’s “The Little Mermaid.” Over 100 people auditioned, including over 30 from age 4 to 11, which lead to the casting of not just understudies, but two entire lead casts that will split the weekends of August 11th, 12th, 13th & 14th and August 18th, 19th, 20th, & 21st.
Leading the first weekend cast, as Ariel, will be Amber Baker, who returns to performing after an eight-year hiatus, and introduces her 5-year-old son Desmond to the world of theater. She’ll be joined by 2015 PAAC Young Performer of the Year Jillian Sollid as Flounder; PAAC newcomers Alec Boehmer as Sebastian and Andrew Chirico as Scuttle; 2015 PAAC Newcomer of the Year, heart throb Alex Herman as Prince Eric; Alec VanHorn coming off a tremendous performance as Jud in OKLAHOMA! appears as the Pilot, and 2015 PAAC Actor of the Year Erik Kuhnle reprises Prince Eric’s loyal assistant Grimsby. PAAC’s, default-by-sheer-talent, powerful female lead Leslie Sollid takes the role of Ursula joined by veteran character actors Craig Grabarczyk (Putnam Spelling Bee/Rocky Horror ’15) and Abby Letts as devious eels Flotsam & Jetsam.
Featured in both casts, returning to the Historic Vista Theater stage for the first time in over a decade as King Triton, is veteran actor Tom Laitinen. A man who grew up on the stage and has traveled the United States performing in all kinds of roles, including quite a few original roles and many Shakespearian characters. Tom couldn’t be more excited to return to the Vista especially as he gets to join his son Jacob, a Vista favorite in his own right, who is Sebastian in the second weeks cast.
The second week’s cast is lead by 2015 Actress of the Year Maggie Aartila who returns to the stage to play Ariel after her award winning performance as Belle in the 2015 Vista production of Disney’s “Beauty & the Beast.” Rounding up the main oceanic cast is the aforementioned Jacob Laitenen as Sebastian, Ally Bellanger as Scuttle, and young newcomer Alaura Welsh as Flounder. Relative PAAC newcomer Cody Johnson (Oklahoma!) gets his first lead as Prince Eric, to be joined by Ben Bickler (Grimsby), Taylor Bordeaux (Pilot) and Thomas Zeigler (Chef Louis). Vocal powerhouse Gretchen Hirzel takes charge of her first major role as Ursula to be joined by Rebecca Rucinski & (once again) Abby Letts as Flotsam & Jetsam.
Showtime is 7:30 pm Thurs-Sat & 2:00 pm on Sunday. Tickets to see these two top tier casts are $12 for adults and $8 for H.S. students & under and seniors (62+). They are available at the Historic Vista Theater Box Office, Rare Earth Goods in Ishpeming, Snowbound Books in Marquette and Gitche Gumee Café & Records in the Village Shopping Center in Marquette.
