ESCANABA — The Escanaba Memorial Day event was held at the Gardens of Rest Memorial Park in Wells Township. The event consisted of a gun salute along with the honoring of several veterans. One veteran honored was a previous prisoner of war and has also received two purple hearts.

“This is a very special day and we do this because we want the people to come out here and honor the ones they have lost in the past year and all their loved ones of course. Said by Vice Commander of Delta Co. Veteran’s Council, Davie Wilson, “it’s a family gathering and it’s a wonderful ceremony.”

Veterans in the area came from all different military branches and thought the ceremony well represented their hard work.

“The honors as far as what we’ve had, has been excellent. Said Air Force Veteran, Ron Magnuson, “the participation has been great and the veterans who participate in the program are great.”

Boy scouts from all over the Upper Peninsula were also involved with the ceremony. The Scouts were excited to be a part of such a significant event and to help serve their country.

“It’s pretty fun kind of serving your country as a boy scout” said Boy Scout, Peter Barren.

The veterans and families in the area, were all honored during the ceremony. Which also had several guest speakers to thank all the veterans for their service.
