Elementary students learn about plow safety
EBEN JUNCTION — Plow drivers from the Alger County Road Commission visit area schools around this time every year to help teach kids how to stay safe around heavy snow removal equipment.
One of them made a stop at the kindergarten and first grade classes of Superior Central Elementary School this morning.
“It’s a good reminder for the children, especially when the snow is starting to fly that there are big trucks on the roads and that our number one concern for them is their safety,” said Kindergarten Teacher Christy Knaus.
Kids were told of the dangers of creating snow forts near the road and were warned to stay clear of the trucks when the drivers are clearing the streets.
After learning a lesson in the classroom, students got to check out the real–life vehicle.
“Their favorite part is to go see the truck. They love the big truck, and to blow the horn and to really see how big it is,” added Knaus.
“They get to see how big the equipment actually is when they’re standing by it,” said Andy Salmi, a driver at the Alger County Road Commission. “It’s kind of intimidating when they’re that size. You save one life, it’s worth it.”
The Road Commission also visited Au–Train Onota and Munising Schools this week as part of their winter school safety program.
