People know the risks of drunk driving, but many people do not know about drugged driving. Someone can get pulled over for drugged driving, even if a driver is using legal drugs, like prescriptions.
The Michigan State Police at the Negaunee Post have been seeing drugged drivers, but do not know the specific amount of drivers who are pulled over. They have a drug recognition expert at the post that can be called to help determine if a person is driving under the influence of drugs.
Prescription and over the counter medications can affect people differently; it is important to read labels carefully on all medications.
A driver can get pulled over for drunk or drugged driving while operating a different motor vehicle, or a bike. That catches many people by surprise. Since a bike is not considered a motorized vehicle, a person cannot get a drunk driving offense. However, they can be cited, or arrested for, Drunk and Disorderly.
The safest option is to get someone else to drive after drinking alcohol or if you are unsure about the side effects of using medications.
