Drunk Driver vs. Pedestrian in Franklin Township

A Michigan Tech grad student is recovering after being hit by a drunk driver.

State Police from the Calumet Post say it happened overnight Saturday morning on M–26 in Franklin Township.

Shortly after 2am, 23–year–old Jonathan Ebel of Laurium was walking on the underpass beneath the Portage Lake Lift Bridge.

Police say he was trying to cross the road when a 41–year–old Dollar Bay man drove into him.

Ebel was taken to Portage Health, and later transferred to Marquette General.

State Police say his injuries are not life–threatening, but they say he has numerous broken bones.

They arrested the driver for operating while intoxicated.

His name is being withheld pending arraignment, which is expected to take place in District Court on Wednesday.

The accident is still under investigation, and additional charges could be filed.
