Dr. Benishek Comments on Army’s Decision on NMU’s ROTC Program

WASHINGTON, DC: Dr. Dan Benishek (MI-01) today commented on the U.S. Army’s announcement that Northern Michigan University’s (NMU) ROTC program has been removed from the list of programs facing elimination.

“This decision is good news for NMU and all of Northern Michigan. The Army recognized what we all already know—that Northern’s ROTC is a very successful program and an important part of our community. Thanks to the hard work of President Haynes and others at Northern, as well as local and federal leaders, cadets at NMU will continue to be served by a top-notch ROTC program up here in Marquette,” said Dr. Dan Benishek, a general surgeon and lifelong resident of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

In early October, Dr. Benishek sent a letter, signed by a bipartisan coalition of lawmakers, to Secretary of the Army John McHugh expressing support for NMU and asking questions regarding the proposed closure of university’s ROTC program.
