HOUGHTON — Two big names are moving into downtown Houghton. ABC 10’s Keweenaw Bureau Reporter Rick Allen has the details.
While most downtowns in the Copper Country are fighting to keep their businesses…Houghton continues to attract new ones.
The Travelodge Hotel on the west end of Shelden Avenue will undergo major renovations beginning this Spring and be rebranded as a Quality Inn & Suites. The change will undoubtedly make staying right in the downtown more attractive to visitors.
Also coming to the area is the coffee shop giant Biggby’s Coffee.
Downtown Houghton is no stranger to big names…having once been the home of a Big Boy’s Restaurant, a McDonald’s and a Burger King.
But decades of exodus has reversed in recent years…as more and more businesses choose to make Houghton their home.
Business Development Director Susie Landers said, “I think people are starting to realize that you can live in a community and have everything that you need accessible to you. Before, I think, everyone thought you had to move away to get what you needed, but I think there’s resources here. We’re showing that this community not only is supportive of the people here in this community but the businesses.”
It’s a trend the city of Houghton hopes continues.
