Downstate Man Still Critical After Boat Accident

One of the men in a weekend boating accident off the eastern U.P. is still fighting for his life tonight.

75-year-old Norman Willis of Cheboygan is still in critical condition.

He was said to be recovering in Traverse City at first, but the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Department now says he’s at War Memorial Hospital in the Soo.

The accident happened Sunday afternoon just northwest of Drummond Island.

Willis was in a 16-foot boat with 80-year-old George Lund, also from Cheboygan.

Police say they hit a series of wakes from other boats that sent their boat out of control.

Lund was thrown overboard.

Willis was thrown forward from his seat and knocked unconscious.

When he came to, the boat was spinning in circles and Lund was face-down in the water.

Lund died at War Memorial.

Neither man was wearing a life preserver.

Alcohol use wasn’t involved.
