Double pedestrian accident sends two to hospital

CHOCOLAY TOWNSHIP — The Chocolay Township Police Department responded to a double pedestrian accident on US-41 just south of the M-28 intersection.

The vehicle was driven by 57-year-old William Bellanger of Marquette. While traveling north bound, Bellanger struck 28-year-old Louis Kowalski and 25-year-old Jaimie Skytta, both from Marquette. Kowalski and Skytta had just been dropped off by a MarqTran bus and were attempting to cross in a dark, non-crosswalk area.

Along with several witnesses, Bellanger administrated first aid after striking the subjects. Kowalski and Skytta were transported to UP Health System – Marquette to be treated for non-life threatening injuries.

The Chocolay Township Police were assisted at the scene by the Marquette County Sheriff’s Department, Keweenaw Indian Tribal Police, and the Chocolay Township Fire Department.

According to police, alcohol was not a factor and no citations have been issued at this time.
