DNR presents “Rec. 101” outdoor events

CHAMPION — Michigan is rolling out the “green carpet” to welcome everyone to the woods and waters, with Recreation 101.

Rec 101,” is a series of introductory classes taught by DNR staff or expert volunteers from organizations, guide services, outfitters and more. Each park has it’s own set of activities.

“Rec 101 that we do here in the fall by our staff is, teaching people how to kayak and different safety aspects. A lot of programs put on camping 101 which helps you start a fire, put up a tent, helping you learn the different aspects of it,” said Melanie Brand, Baraga State Park.

The program began with state parks in 2011, and is now offered statewide in Michigan state parks as well as community recreation agencies through a collaboration with the Michigan Recreation and Park Association. Every recreational pursuit, from archery to ziplining is offered. But park employees tell us watching the families spend time together is what they like most.

“I really enjoy a lot of the families getting involved, you see a mom and her children, dad and children, families in general out here getting kayaks and learning it as a family so they can do it as a group together,” continued Brand.

If you want to learn how to fish for Walleye head over to Newaygo State Park this weekend for their Rec. 101 training event. Baraga state park will have Kayaking 101 next month.
