Dive Team ready for summer season

MARQUETTE — The Marquette Police Dive Team have trained and are prepared for the summer season, a time of year where crowds of swimmers head to Lake Superior.

The Dive Team consists of six members that have various duties in the lake. From rescuing swimmers to even getting video footage of underwater pipes. The team also works heavily with the Marquette County Sheriff’s Department and also with the U.S. Coast Guard.

Recently the two collaborated to install anchor points for boats in the Lower Harbor of Marquette. If you do decide to take a dip into Lake Superior this summer, there are several safety measures that the dive team suggests.

“We recommend swimming in a designated swimming area, we have several of those in the city of Marquette and those are staffed during the daytime hours by lifeguards. Said by Detective Sgt. Chris Aldrich, “there’s also life saving equipment present at those locations so we recommend people take advantage of those spots to go swimming.”

Aldrich also wants to remind swimmers to never swim alone and to always be wary of the water conditions. One of the most important factors that swimmers need to keep in mind is to never underestimate Lake Superior. Each member of the dive team is heavily trained and are also officers in the Marquette Police Department.
