MARQUETTE — Earlier today, an event designed by the local RICC advocacy group held an event promoting people to Disable The Label.
Over a dozen tables were set up throughout the Westwood Mall in Marquette with representatives from local businesses. The purpose of the event is to raise awareness to members of the community to show that people with disabilities are just as capable as someone without one.
“Being disabled myself, I just feel like I’ve been labeled so many times,” said RICC Member Caitlin Fowler, “that I feel that it’s important to show off that people with disabilities are capable of doing everything ourselves, so don’t label us just because we have a certain disability, just because we talk a certain way or walk a certain way.”
The event also helps people with disabilities see what different types of beneficial services are available as well. It is expected to return again next year to continue to promote people to disable the label.
