IRONWOOD — State Representative Scott Dianda (D-Calumet) and state Senator Tom Casperson (R-Escanaba) announced their support of Ironwood’s proposed downtown Art Park Wednesday.

The city of Ironwood, in conjunction with the Downtown Ironwood Development Authority (DIDA), Downtown Art Place (DAP) and the Historic Ironwood Theater, has developed a plan for the Art Park.  The Art Park will be located on city-owned property on Aurora Street between Mattson’s TV and Appliance and Book World, across from the DAP and Historic Ironwood Theater.

“Arts and culture are important aspects of community, and I am proud that the city of Ironwood is embracing an opportunity to display art in a public setting,” said Dianda. “I am also proud that the Michigan Economic Development Corp. (MEDC) has offered to match the city of Ironwood’s $10,000 goal for this project. I am hopeful that the city meets its goal and receives the state assistance that has been offered to them.”

The Art Park will provide a public location to display art, hold performances and art classes and promote arts and culture within the city of Ironwood.

The Art Park proposes a number of elements which include:

  • Concrete sidewalk and performance area
  • Locations to display art/sculpture displays
  • A wall mural which can include art from artists and non-artists
  • A chalk board for use by the public
  • A fence for displaying art
  • Benches and tables, landscaping and a parking lot.

“I fully support the Art Park concept because it is a creative and innovative idea to help attract young talent and visitors to downtown Ironwood,” said Casperson. “The park can be part of a comprehensive and coordinated effort to revitalize our downtown areas and enrich our communities for families and small businesses alike.”
