DEQ cuts Eagle Mine’s discharge permit by half

HUMBOLDT — After some revisions based off input from the public, the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality announced that it has approved revisions to the surface water discharge permit for the Eagle Mine’s Humboldt Mill.

The revisions in the DEQ’s permit are geared towards protecting the wetlands and other areas near the Escanaba River. The total amount of water that the mill can discharge per day was cut in half from 2.8 million gallons to 1.4

This is the discharged water that helps process the copper and nickel. The mill will also monitor the water temperature of the discharged water.
