Delta County Owns U.P. State Fair

After nearly 6 months of uncertainty, the long-term future of the U.P. State Fair in Escanaba is finally secure.

Governor Jennifer Granholm has turn the fairgrounds, and operation of everything in them, over to Delta County control.

Ishpeming Township State Senator Mike Prusi sponsored the bill that made the transfer happen.

The bill passed the state House last month.

Granholm issued an executive order in February that cut both the U.P. and Detroit State Fairs from the budget after this year.

But there’s a new fair authority in place to run the U.P. event in 2010 and beyond.

The new authority board should meet for the first time sometime between August 1st and the start of this year’s fair, which is August 17th.
