Creating art from strands of hair

Many of us like to keep mementos and keepsakes reminding us of good times shared with loved ones.

One group at the Marquette Regional History Center got together recently to make a very unique type of keepsake. The center offered a class called “Braids to Blossoms,” where people could learn how to make art out of human hair.

“During the Victorian era they would make sentimental hair art out of people’s hair to remember friends or family who had either moved away or had passed away and its just a weird quirky little thing that’s kind of fun to do.”

Those in the class learned how to make a flower out of hair, but if the idea of working with human hair went out of peoples’ comfort zones, there was a synthetic option. In addition, they got the opportunity to look at some hair wreaths and jewelry from the Victorian Era.
