Cougar Sighted in Ontonagon County

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources has confirmed that there is a cougar in Ontonagon County. A local resident managed to video tape the sighting on private property on September 8th. The footage shows a cougar walking past the camera and an ear tag and radio collar can be seen on the animal. You can see this video on ABC 10 News Now tonight at 5:30 and 11 p.m.

Until recently, the DNR believed that there were no cougars left in Michigan. It is thought that this cougar may have traveled from one of the western states where cougars are often collared for research projects.

The DNR stresses that anyone who happens to come in contact with the cougar should not approach the animal and do not run away.
