Coreau at Red Wings camp

After deciding to forgo his senior season on the hockey at Northern Michigan University back in March, Jared Coreau is adjusting to life in the pros with the Detroit Red Wings.

Just two and a half months after having surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder, Coreau was back on the ice Wednesday during the first day of the Red Wings development camp in Traverse City.

Coreau is one of several goalie prospects the Wings have in the organization. The former NMU goalie hopes to make a good first impression during the week long camp with his new team.

“I’m not trying to make the Red Wings out of this camp. Its really to just make a name for myself and show everyone I can work hard,” said Coreau.

“There’s a lot of good players in this organization- forwards, defenseman, and especially goalies. If you think about it, goalies try and pick a team where they can get up (to the pros) the fastest. But no matter where you go, you are going to have to beat someone. Healthy competition is always what I look for,” Coreau added.

During the first day of camp, Coreau spent time working with Jeff Blashill, the head coach of the Grand Rapids Griffins.

“He (Coach Blashill) was big on keeping it short, keeping it pretty pristine and everyone goes pretty hard,” said Coreau.

“From what I saw, there isn’t much time to mess around, its hard work all the time,” Coreau went on to say.

Coreau will most likely start the upcoming season with the Red Wings in Grand Rapids as the Griffins backup goaltender.
