Construction on new non-motorized trail to begin this year

ISHPEMING — The Ishpeming area is about to become even more welcoming to outdoor enthusiasts.

At tonight’s City Council meeting, GEI Consultants presented an updated plan for a new trail to be built on Malton Road. The original plan was to have the trail run from the Iron Ore Heritage trail to New York Street, but because of some construction planned on the street in 2017, the city felt like it should hold off on those last few feet.

The trail will be open to hikers and bikers, and will eventually connect the Iron Ore Heritage Trail to existing trail systems in the area.

“Everybody believes the UP is a Mecca for recreational activity, we’re just trying to take advantage of that and push forward on it and make it more of a Mecca,” said City Manager Mark Slown.

GEI and the city hope to start construction on the trail later this year.
