Conservation and sustainability forum

Northern Michigan University held day two of a community forum to get the central U.P. talking about conservation and sustainable living.

NMU’s Earth, Environmental and Geographical Sciences Department held a panel discussion on local sustainability this morning.

The featured guest says he’s thrilled by what he’s seen and heard in the area since thursday.

Dr. Curt Meine says he likes the attention that many people in the U.P. pay to native plants and locally grown food, but Lake Superior is on his mind whenever he visits the region, saying fresh water’s importance is easy to forget about.

The sustainability discussion followed a screening of “Green Fire”, a documentary film about conservationist Aldo Leopold.

Meine has written a biography of Leopold and is a senior fellow with the Aldo Leopold Foundation in Wisconsin.
