Competency exam ordered for Mackinac County murder suspect

ST. IGNACE — A man accused of shooting his father will undergo a competency exam.

Richard McKenzie, Jr., 53, appeared in Mackinac County District Court Wednesday for a preliminary exam.  A competency exam was ordered, which could take a couple of months to complete.

He is still lodged in the Mackinac County Jail, but will be transported to a facility to take the exam.

McKenzie, Jr. is charged with first degree murder after allegedly killing his father, Richard McKenzie, Sr., 75, at a home in St. Ignace Township last month.
