ISHPEMING — The best collegiate Nordic skiers in the Midwest will be in the Upper Peninsula later this week.
Northern Michigan University is hosting the NCAA Central Regional Championships Saturday and Sunday at the Al Quaal Recreation Area in Ishpeming. NMU and Michigan Tech are two of the seven teams expected to compete for a regional title.
NMU Nordic Skiing Coach Sten Fjeldheim is looking forward to the big meet at a place his team is very familiar with.
“It’s like home court advantage or home ice,” said Fjeldheim. “Our athletes are familiar with the course, all of the corners and they know what lines to take and how much speed they can handle on the course. They know how tough the climbs are and how to attack the course. That definitely helps.”
“It’s a big deal,” said Jon Kangas, the Ishpeming Public Works Director. “To host NCAA Regionals, I think this is maybe the third time we’ve hosted regionals in my time with the city. We’ve also hosted conference championships here for the collegiate level.”
The freestyle races will take place on Saturday, followed by the classic races on Sunday.
