City Commission conducts traffic study

MARQUETTE — The Marquette City Commissioners discussed what to do with some grant money to ensure traffic safety for both pedestrians and drivers.

Lundin Mining set aside almost one half a million dollars for road repair and $200,000 for safety measures last year when the new truck route was set in place. The traffic study will be looking at the various pedestrian and truck usage on the routes that trucks use, mainly Sugarloaf Avenue and Wright Street going towards Ishpeming and Negaunee.

“Well I think that density of travel, how many cars, how many trucks. Are there problems at the light, at the different lights that they encounter,” said Marquette Mayor Pro Tem Dave Campana. “As spring goes away, you’re going to see some road damage. That has to be addressed and they are going to look for that.”

The study will be taking place within the next few months and should be completed by the end of the year.
