Steps are moving forward to demolish the building near the Cinder Pond Marina in Marquette.

The Community Services Department will be applying for a nearly $80,000 from the Michigan DNR Waterways Program.  The grant would help with costs of demolishing the building, which was damaged in early March.

“It would include portions of demolition, relocation of utilities, and it’s really a supplemental grant so it’s for those things, those items that perhaps the insurance won’t cover,” Marquette’s Community Services Director Karl Zueger said.

“Our goal is to have their project completed by June 1, and certainly that’s contingent on permits and availability of material and contractors and those type of things as soon as possible.”

There are also plans to bring in new portable bathroom facilities and a temporary administration building after the marina’s building is demolished.

The demolition is expected to costs about $255,000.

Zueger told the commission he hopes to have plans for a new marina building by late summer or early fall.
