Child runs into roadway, hit by vehicle

A five-year-old boy is in the hospital after an SUV ran into him in Houghton County.

The accident happened just before 5 p.m. on Boston Cross Cut Road in Franklin Township.

The Houghton County Sheriff’s Office says a Jeep Cherokee heading eastbound on the road struck the child as he ran into the roadway.

Police say poor visibility, high snow banks, and icy roads caused the accident.

The boy was transported to Portage Health Hospital for the treatment of injuries.

Police want to remind people to drive according to weather conditions and be aware of pedestrians at all times.  They also advise drivers to allow extra distance for stopping vehicles, and be mindful of limited visibility due to high snowbanks.

The Michigan State Police and Mercy Ambulance assisted at the scene.
