Cemetery walk to commemorate the Civil War
MARQUETTE — The Marquette Regional History Center guided a tour through the Seventh Street Cemetery earlier this evening.
The focus of the walk was to honor Civil War soldiers at the one–hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the ending of the Civil War. A very large crowd of all ages came to pay tribute to those who paid with their lives in the Civil War.
“It’s a wonderful way to celebrate this history of this area and of the Civil War,” said Actor Alastar Dimitrie, “it’s received a wonderful response from people. I think it makes the history come alive in a different way that it wouldn’t from simply reading it so I think it’s a unique opportunity to celebrate that.”
The portrayals of Albert Jackson, Edward Watson, Addison Shaw also helped remind people of the importance of learning about our history.
“Because without remembering history,” Dimitrie continued, “there’s no way to proceed into the future. History in a way shapes the future.”
This was the final event in The Dawn of Peace, the series of sesquicentennial of the end of the Civil War events in Marquette.
