Cell phone company withdraws tower application

HOUGHTON — Concerned parents in the Copper Country will not have to worry about a new cell phone tower being constructed where some of their kids go to school.

Houghton-Portage Township Schools Superintendent Doreen Klingbeil notified parents by e–mail this morning that Verizon Wireless withdrew its application to build a cell phone tower near Houghton Elementary.

Verizon wanted to construct a 75-foot tower about 300 feet from the school. A group of parents that met Sunday wanted the new tower at least 1500 feet away from the school.
