Celebrate International Archaeology Day in the U.P.

MARQUETTE — International Archaeology Day will be celebrated in the U.P. on Saturday.

A special exhibit at the Marquette Regional History Center starts at noon. The celebration will include hundreds of artifacts along with hands-on- activities, dig-site stories, games, demonstrations, pottery, interactive booths and a five-foot mammoth. Museum experts say they even have a special surprise for guests.

Museum Educator Betsy Rutz shares her enthusiasm “I am very excited, we will have a site reveal tomorrow, so there is a Marquette County site that has yet to be revealed to the public. It is really neat, it shows that there was a winter encampment in the 1600’s, so archaeologists will be here to explain that and the new finds found in the last few years. It is really interesting to see what was here, just below the surface.”

Regional experts will be on hand to share their work, prized artifacts and expertise. This is the 3rd annual Archaeology Fair. The Archaeology Fair is free once you pay the general admission price. The event takes place from noon until 3 p.m.
