Celebrate Heikki Lunta in Negaunee

Since we can’t stop the snow at this time of the year in the Upper Peninsula we might as well have some fun with it.

That’s what the Negaunee Irontown Association has been doing for more than twenty years with the Heikki Lunta Winterfest.

Events will include a bonfire on the shores of Teal Lake and fireworks launched from Negaunee High School.

Anyone can be a Negaunee Irontown Supporter.

“The Negaunee Irontown Supporter Card came up when we were thirty years old, so this is the fifth year doing it, and basically it’s a four sided card with forty-seven businesses on there offering different promotions,” former President of the Negaunee Irontown Association Kimme Peterson said.

The supporter card helps keep down the cost of the Heikki Lunta–and other events throughout the year.

“It (the Negaunee Irontown Association) started in 1979, went Negaunee graduated it’s 100th graduating class and the feedback was so good from that, that everyone wanted to keep it going,” Peterson said.  “It’s thirty-five years later and we’re still doing it.”

“We have a summer fireworks parade and celebration and now we also have this winter festival that we’ve been doing for twenty, twenty-five years now.”
