CCI Name Change Made Official

One of the U.P.’s largest employers said 3 months ago that it would soon be changing its name.

Today it’s official.

Cleveland-Cliffs’ new name is Cliffs Natural Resources.

It’s the same name it wanted after the $4 billion buyout of Alpha Natural Resources that it proposed in July.

The merger hasn’t gone through yet, but the federal paperwork to change its name has.

Alpha Natural Resources is a Virginia coal-mining company.

It’s the country’s largest producer of metallurgical coal, which is needed to manufacture steel.

The combined company would have just shy of 9,000 employees.
