Casperson introduces transgender bathroom bill
LANSING — An Upper Peninsula lawmaker has introduced legislation that would require students in Michigan schools to use the bathroom of their biological sex.

Loading ...State Sen. Tom Casperson (R-Escanaba) introduced the legislation on Wednesday. The bill would require schools to make other accommodations for students who identify themselves as transgender, with written permission from their parents to do so.
ABC 10 spoke with Casperson about this exact legislation in March.
“It’s real simple, I just hope that the parental involvement becomes a priority,” Casperson told ABC 10. “And that protection of all the kids becomes a priority, and that we do reach out and offer some help to these young people that might be struggling, but we have to consider everybody in the equation we can’t just consider the one scenario that they’re talking about.”
The bill comes on the heels of a letter from the Obama Administration, which outlined policies for safe and supportive learning environments for LGBTQ students in schools in hopes that students who identify in this group will experience less harassment.
