MARQUETTE — A traffic collision in the city of Marquette on Monday was caused partially from a driver and pedestrians being unclear of who had the right of way.

In order for vehicles and pedestrians to co–exist safely on the roads, many precautions must take place. One of the main concerns for potential risk is distracted walkers and drivers.

“So what we have to do in either one of these situations is basically pay attention to your surroundings,” said Marquette County Undersheriff Michael Klein, “and be cognizant of what’s around you so you can make a better decision. The first thing you want to do is look left, right, and then back again left and make sure that the crosswalk is clear for you to proceed into the crosswalk. The second thing is you want to make sure you make eye contact with the driver of the vehicle, so he or she knows what you’re going to be doing.”

Many areas are using signs that light up as well as delineator signs to show drivers where pedestrians are crossing. In Michigan, pedestrians must wait until traffic is clear before crossing the street. Drivers should only stop if a pedestrian is already in the crosswalk, not if they are waiting to cross.
