Calumet Prepares for State Final

CALUMET — The buzz at Calumet High School might be at an all–time high as the Lady Copper Kings are in the state basketball title game for the first time in school history.

After defeating Gwinn for the Class C regional championship last week, they pulled off two upsets over Tawas and (at the time) the undefeated Laingsburg to get to the state championship game. And at this point in their journey, they have embraced the underdog role.

“We completely realize we’ve been an underdog for past three games that we’ve played and we kind of like being in that position. There’s no pressure on us and we go out and just do what we do. The kids have responded fantastically mentally through this whole thing and they’re right where they need to be upstairs,” Coach Jeff Twardzik said.

Coach Twardzik added his team may not have the most athletic players in the state. But their selflessness and ability to get everyone involved is what sets them apart.

“If somebody gets beat and I have to leave my player and I have to help them, I know somebody is helping me and I can do that with 100% confidence and not go halfway ever. They go all out for each other and have trust in each other and that’s the reason that they’re here,” said Twardzik.

Calumet will take on Flint Hamady at the Breslin Center tomorrow afternoon with tipoff set for 4 o’clock. We send our best wishes to them.
