Businesses prepare for boost in economy with upcoming LPGA tourney

ESCANABA — The Island Resort Championship, also known as the LPGA Golf Tournament is less than a month away. In this tournament, women golfers are competing for a spot in the LPGA tour.

Businesses in the county are preparing for the economic boost that typically comes with the tournament. More than hundreds of women golfers from all over the country partake in this tournament, leading a need for lodging and food services in the area.

“It’s a great economic impact for our area.” Said Delta County Marketing/Communications Manager, Rick Elrod, “we do actually give out, they give all the golfers two–dollar bills so when they are out in the community spending money, the businesses can see that money directly coming in and know that it’s coming in from that.” This event not only assists with Delta County’s economy but also promotes what the area has to offer.

“A great promotion for our area and the golf course out at sweet grass, they got some national attention from their media that goes out around our country and really highlights our area
as golfing and just in general.”

This is the sixth year in a row that the tournament will be held at the Sweet Grass Golf Course in Harris. The event will be from June 24th through June 26th.
